History
of Building
A
designated historic landmark, The New Mart building has earned a reputation
as the pacesetting contemporary resource venue in the country. Dedicated
in 1928, the 12-story, 350,000 square-foot structure was the city's very
first high-rise. Built by the sons of Harris Newmark, a prominent
Los Angeles entrepreneur and philanthropist, the building was named in his
honor. The Harris Newmark Building was for many years a premier apparel
center address, serving as a posh location for retail stores, offices
and manufacturing.
The
building was purchased in the early 1980s by Ben and Joyce Eisenberg.
With the encouragement of some forward-thinking manufacturers, the new
owners implemented a plan to convert the building into wholesale
showrooms. In 1987, the renovation was completed and the building was
renamed The New Mart.
A
second renovation project began in 1996 that included the restoration
of The New Mart's original facade. Work was completed in 1997, just in
time to celebrate the building's 10th anniversary as a showroom venue.
